Welcome to Free Writing, a truly free writing prompt community on Dreamwidth!

Free writing is a form of writing that is meant to strengthen mental and physical writing skills through the act of writing itself. Free writing is to writing for a purpose what jogging or treadmill running is to a race. You do not start out intending to go anywhere in particular, but by the end you end up more ahead than when you had started.

Free writing is really easy, and the biggest mistake made by people when starting out is overthinking. The idea that you just write to write, to move your hand or click the keyboard and act in the motion of thinking, and moving your hands to put it on paper or screen. For people who write by hand, free writing works mental and physical muscles which improve writing ability greatly over time. For people who use the computer to write, free working will work mental and physical muscles too which will help you write faster, clearer and with less typos to snag you down.

How this community works.

Each morning I will post a prompt in the community. This prompt can be anything really, a physical object, an idea, a phrase or a setting. All you need to do is start writing. Do not think, do not come up with a story or a motive or plan characters and development. Just write, whatever pops into your head, whatever starts to motivate you when you read the prompt, write. Sometimes a story and theme will emerge and you can keep the going, and this what I meant when I said you end more ahead than when you started, but sometimes a story or theme won't emerge and that is okay too. The important thing is that you wrote something, and you practiced having a thought and moving it to paper or screen.
